Garbage, Recycling Cancellations for Portage

city of portageDangerously low temperatures continue to plague Northwest Indiana this morning. While our roadways have been cleared and the state of emergency has been lifted, we are still extremely concerned about the effects of the cold weather and wind chill factors on our residents and employees. The National Weather Service indicates that frostbite will occur in approximately 10 minutes with temperatures and wind chills that we are experiencing today.

We have determined that it is unsafe to have our sanitation and other outdoor personnel out in the elements today; therefore, we have canceled Mondays and Tuesdays regular garbage and recycling routes. Wednesday and Thursday routes will be picked up as scheduled. Bulk items will be picked up next week also at no charge and we will certainly understand if residents have extra trash next week if you were missed this week.

Also, roadways are still dangerously slick throughout the City and the temperatures make spreading salt useless. As the day warms up, we will begin to spread salt; however, we advise everyone to drive with extreme caution for the next 24 to 36 hours.

Residents with weather related issues or questions regarding the Blackboard Connect notification system that we have been utilizing to notify residents can call our Emergency Management Hotline at 764-5751.
