During a moment when hospital beds are needed more than ever, Franciscan Health Munster adds to that vital inventory with the opening of a major expansion at its hospital on Monday, Jan. 11.
The $16.5 million third-floor north tower expansion at Franciscan Health Munster, 701 Superior Ave., adds approximately 20,000 square feet with 25 private patient rooms. A handful of the new rooms are considered specialty rooms that can accommodate bariatric patients, ADA patients, and patients requiring isolation. The new addition brings the total number of inpatient hospital beds at the hospital up to 88.
“The new 25 bed surgical unit at Franciscan Health Munster is a wonderful addition to our hospital. This state-of-the-art addition was designed and built with safety, quality, beauty, and comfort all in mind. We are thrilled to provide such an outstanding healing environment to the communities we’re privileged to serve,” said Sean Leahy, Chief Operating Officer for Franciscan Health Munster, Hammond and Dyer.
In addition to the expansion, the surgery department has completed a multi-phase renovation project, modernizing four of the campus’ eight operating rooms, creating private “prep, hold, recovery” patient rooms and adding many other new features to enhance the overall patient experience and quality of care.
The expansion project also anticipates increased demand created by the nearby Centennial Village development. “We want to be able to provide additional capacity here at Franciscan when it’s needed,” said Leahy.
