Experience Calumet Region History April 19-October 6
Discover an unexpected national treasure located along the south shore of Lake Michigan through the newest exhibition in the Calumet Voices, National Stories series at the Indiana Welcome Center. Join local museums from across the region as they come together to share a vibrant collection of voices and stories that have shaped the American experience.
"As we unveil this captivating new exhibit, we embark on a journey through time, where each artifact and narrative tells a story of resilience, innovation and the human spirit,” said Nikki Lopez, Interim President/CEO of the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority. “We invite you to join us as we celebrate the richness of our past, igniting curiosity and fostering a deeper understanding of the world we inhabit today."
The exhibit was organized by the Field Museum in collaboration with the Calumet Heritage Partnership and is presented by the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. This new installment of the dynamic Calumet Voices, National Stories exhibition series showcases Calumet’s natural environment, industrial might and cultural richness – and how they combine to create this unique landscape.
“This exhibition partnership stems in part from our years of doing ethnographic research in the Calumet region, and hearing residents talk in a variety of ways about their deep connections to this place and to each other,” said Madeleine Tudor, curatorial adviser and Sr. Environmental Social Scientist with the Keller Science Action Center at the Field Museum. “We learned that the lived experiences of what it means to be a community, the palpable pride and dignity of labor and the human connection to the natural environment were strongly embedded in this landscape.”
The show will include flora, fauna and fossils from the Field Museum's Calumet collections, a ten-foot-tall steel plate of historic proportions that was personalized by women steelworkers who were integral to the WWII war effort, contemporary Native American artwork and many other unique elements that embody stories of industrial might, fragile ecosystems and rich cultures that make the Calumet region like no other.
