Fegely Students Serve

During the last few months, Fegely students have had the opportunity to participate in numerous events involving charity and service. These events have allowed our students to celebrate as a school and to experience the joy of serving their fellow students and the community. portage-township-schools

Our student council began the fall with a Cystic Fibrosis event. Students at Fegely participated by purchasing pumpkins. At Fegely, each of our students is part of an advisor class. Advisors encouraged our students to help with this worthwhile cause. The money raised by each advisor, benefited individuals with Cystic Fibrosis.

One week prior to Thanksgiving, the students at Fegely experienced the annual Candlelight Inn. The Candlelight Inn is a semi-formal sit down meal. The teachers and support staff at Fegely plan this experience for our students. Our students and staff are encouraged to dress nicely for this event. Our students sit down to a family style meal with their advisor group and advisor teacher. Our kitchen staff, teachers and parents serve the meal to our student body. The students prepare in advance by discussing proper table etiquette. The candlelight meal is accompanied by dinner music and pumpkin pie. At the conclusion of the meal, our students are excused. Teachers, parents, and custodians then begin the process of resetting the all-purpose room for the next seating. This meal is a Fegely tradition that our students remember years later.

Our National Junior Honor Society has also been hard at work. During the months of November and December, the Fegely National Junior Honor Society has served our school by working our concession stand nightly. As our wrestlers and basketball players compete, students in the NJHS commit their time. They prepare popcorn, serve parents and students, and stock the shelves. These students give freely of their time and energy.

On December 17, the Fegely Student Council held its annual charity dance. The student council plans this event, including advertising, decorating and working during the dance. This is a dress-up dance for our students. Students are encouraged to attend, and they are aware that all proceeds from the evening are then donated. This year, the money raised will be donated to a local family.

This day was also the culmination of an event to serve those less fortunate. The Fegely Student Council organizes a project called Christmas Family. Each advisor class at Fegely was provided with a family in need. The students in the advisor were then asked to help this family by donating a gift. The Fegely Student Council, through the help of all of our students, was able to brighten the day for thirty families. Each advisor group brought in presents for two children. These presents were then wrapped and prepared for pickup. In addition to the presents for children, each family received food. The student council sponsors shopped for groceries and made bags of food for each family. On this afternoon, student council members helped as the families came in after dismissal to pick up their packages and groceries. This event is truly an opportunity for the Fegely students to give of themselves to those in need within our community.

As you can see, in addition to their academic endeavors, the students at Fegely are learning life lessons, including the importance of service and charity.
