It felt like a summer day as families gathered for Spring Out to Sunset at Sunset Hill Farm County Park on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The day celebrated National Kids to Parks Day and encouraged families to get outside and get active. Families were encouraged to bring their own kites to fly and their pets.
Kids lined up for face painting and a chance to break boards with Valpo ATA Blackbelt Academy during their day in the park. They also joined their families to watch Chicago Street Theatre Children’s Theatre perform Hamelot, 180GO! Stunt Kite Team display kite tricks and Frisbee dogs race for Frisbees.
Front Porch Music held guitar and percussion demonstrations throughout the day and offered musical entertainment. Those looking to get a little more active were invited to join in clogging and Zumba with Good Time Cloggers, as well as hopscotch, four-square and tic-tac-toe in the active family area. Kids and parents alike were excited to learn about farm animals and agriculture and were invited to hold baby goats and partake in the Community Garden Challenge hosted by Northwest Indiana Grow.
Sunset Hill Farm staff also provided wagon tours of the park and asked families to add their own flare to a community mosaic. Each family could add family pictures, buttons or other personal items to the layout. Items were also available for people to cut, transform and glue to the mosaic.
