Evelyn Harris Named 2015 Station Manager of the Year by United Way RSVP of Northwest Indiana

lauw-evelyn-harrisEvelyn Harris, Resource Development Associate for Lake Area United Way was recently awarded the distinction of Station Manager of the Year for the organization’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

The nationwide program is the largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over in the U.S., consisting of over 500,000 volunteers throughout the country. RSVP offers a full range of volunteer opportunities specialized for older and more experienced adults. The program offers seniors a chance to learn new skills, utilize skills they already have and become involved in activities that will benefit their local community. RSVP Station Managers are tasked with overseeing the onsite operations at their location.

Harris, a Crown Point resident, was honored at the RSVP Volunteer Awards and Meeting held on March 27th at Teibel’s Restaurant in Schererville. Harris was cited for her outstanding commitment to coordinating the efforts of LAUW’s senior volunteers. New this year, the Station Manager of the Year was selected by an anonymous panel of judges based on the statistics of the station. When asked about Harris’ contribution to the organization, Michael Glorioso, RSVP Director said, “Evelyn is exactly what we look for and need in a Station Manager. She is available to not only to me but also to the volunteers whenever they are there.” He added, “She goes above and beyond to make sure the program is running smoothly, that the volunteers feel welcomed and safe at the station and that RSVP and United Way are represented in the best light. I am so very proud of her and look forward to working with her for years to come. “

Harris has served in the role of Station Manager since she joined the Lake Area United Way Staff in August of 2013. When asked about her experience Harris said her favorite part is, “Seeing the ladies’ eyes light up because they feel appreciated. They are volunteers who come faithfully to do work that would otherwise be impossible to complete using staff time. Spending time with this group of seniors reminds me of what’s important to me: Loving others to life. This award has encouraged me to continue showing others how important they are, and the difference they make in this world.”
