Over the past decade and a half, “Straight No Chaser” has become synonymous with contemporary a cappella vocal music. In September of 1996, Dan Ponce, a member of Indiana University’s Singing Hoosiers, came up with the idea to put together an elite men’s a cappella ensemble comprised of members of the larger group. He mentioned this to his friends within Singing Hoosiers, and one by one began to assemble the first cast of “Straight No Chaser”. The group began practicing several time per week, and gave their debut performance just a month later on the IU campus in Bloomington at the university’s annual Dance Marathon. “Straight No Chaser” immediately became a popular part of the musical culture at IU, and received critical acclaim for its uniqueness and creativity in performances. As the years have gone by, “Straight No Chaser” has gained national recognition as a premier men’s a cappella ensemble, and has recorded seven CDs of a cappella music which are available throughout the nation. The alumni cast of “Straight No Chaser” continue to experience success in the professional music world, and has recently been featured in sold out performances from coast to coast as well as starring in a PBS television special which is currently airing.

Since its founding in 1996, Indiana University’s “Straight No Chaser” has gone on to perform throughout the nation, spreading their incredible blend of talent and exciting stage presence. In addition to frequent tours throughout the academic year, the group consistently packs the house for its two annual home shows at the Buskirk Chumley Theater in Bloomington and the Indiana University Auditorium.
