Portage dentist Dr. Laura Hannon teamed up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at Smile Brightly, Dr. Hannon’s office, on Saturday afternoon. Hannon decided to give the event a try, as she hosted a blood drive for the first time.
“This is our first event, so it’s a good learning experience,” Hannon said.
The Red Cross brought a large truck to the office, in which the blood donations were made. The truck and signs outside the office caused many different people who were passing by to stop to make donations. The event gave members of the Portage community a chance to do their part in saving lives.
“We wanted to pair with the community and one of our team members actually suggested the blood drive,” Hannon said. “We saw, by meeting with the Red Cross, that there was very much a need for people to donate blood.”
Blood donors also received the chance to enter the office to enjoy several other components of Dr. Hannon’s Spring Open House. One of the unique features of the event was a sign asking people to write what “Smile Brightly” means to them.
“We want to capture the heart of people and how they take that in,” Hannon said.
In addition, there were several different raffles and a few comfort options, as a Mary Kay representative offered attendee’s free hand massages, while someone else was giving chair massages. Fruit and vegetables were among the complimentary foods available along with light refreshments.
According to Hannon, the goal of the Red Cross Blood Drive was to have 25 people turn out to donate. Dr. Hannon has been practicing dentistry for approximately 32 years. She has been located in Portage since 1984.
“I am a general dentist and we do preventative and restorative, or rebuilding, which includes everything within the spectrum of dentistry right now,” Hannon said.
