Don’t Let Your Child’s Summer Be a Bummer!

No Bummer Summer Camp at the Portage Township YMCA kicked off their first week of camp with the all around theme of TEAMWORK. On Tuesday campers wore their favorite team shirt and enjoyed a movie at the Portage IMAX. Wednesday started with a story read by Principal of Willowcreek Middle School, Mrs. Stewart, and concluded with trip to the Railcats game. Seventy five children enjoyed a beautiful day learning the importance of working together as a team such as the Railcats do everyday.

Children enjoy hot lunches and a dip in the pool every afternoon that there is not a field trip. With our focus on youth development, games, crafts, and learning how to give back to the community through service learning projects are a big part of camp.

The Y's unique partnership with St. Mary Medical Center provides several wellness opportunities during camp including physicals, screenings, and educational programs given by trained staff in the medical field.

Due to the high need of childcare during the summer, No Bummer Summer Camp is a great alternative to traditional childcare. Before care and after care are also provided to families as early as 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. "Our camp helps working families in need of care and allows child safety due to lack of supervision as well keeps children off the streets and gives them guidance, fun and a little structure," said Ms. CC, Camp Coordinator.

The Y's most important area of focus is social responsibility. Scholarships are available to those who qualify. This funding is available due to the Y's 2012 Annual Support Campaign, "They Depend on Us, We Depend on You".
