A donation from Michigan City roofing company GAF will help keep emergency healthcare workers safe from the spread of COVID-19 as they work to save lives.
GAF provided a $15,000 gift through its GAF Community Matters initiative to Franciscan Health Michigan City that was used to purchase a LUCAS Chest Compression System for the hospital’s Emergency Department. This hands-free mechanical device delivers chest compressions to sudden cardiac arrest patients. It allows the medical provider to keep a safe distance from the patient, reducing the risk of transmission of airborne viruses such as COVID-19.
GAF Plant Manager Matt Hannon said the company has been lucky to operate in the community for 20 years and wanted to support the work being done by those on the front lines of the pandemic. “Understanding the risk that people put themselves at here, we just wanted to make sure that we could contribute to that work and support it in any way we could,” Hannon said.

The donation from GAF Materials was made through the Franciscan Health Foundation’s Preparedness & Response Fund to assist in the fight against COVID-19. Donations to the fund have also enabled the healthcare system to purchase oxygen flow devices to assist with breathing and recovery in COVID-positive patients, infrared thermometers for temperature checks of employees and visitors and sanitizing stations to clean equipment.
