County Departments Collaborate on Storm Water Project

rot3The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County along with Porter County Parks and Recreation and MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) are collaborating on a project to bring more rain barrels to the citizens of Porter County. They have worked together to launch a website through Upcycle Products that allows citizens to conveniently order and choose from a variety of rain barrels. They will then have the opportunity to pick them up on Sunday, May 18th at Sunset Hill Farm County Park.

Rain Barrels can bring several long-term benefits to the community such as saving residents money, while avoiding run off that can be detrimental to local water sources. According to the EPA, use of a rain barrel can save 1,300 gallons of water throughout the summer. Rich Hudson, MS4 County Coordinator and Porter County Parks and Recreation Board President stated, “We have used a variety of methods for storm water collection over the years. The rain barrels are the most functional and look much nicer than alternative methods.”

For more information or to order a rain barrel for pick up on May 18th, please visit the website at http://upcycle-products.com and select the Porter County, IN order form in the right-hand column.
