Community Healthcare System Expands Services with Stroke and Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point

A new addition to Community Healthcare System, Community Stroke and Rehabilitation Center, at 10215 Broadway Ave., will provide Lake County residents with exceptional care that is convenient and close to home. The four story 129,000 square-foot multispecialty facility in Crown Point will feature inpatient rehabilitation treatment along with physician practices, outpatient services and immediate care for family health and wellness. Upon completion targeted for Spring of 2019, the new center is expected to provide jobs for about 100 full-time employees.

“Residents will find this facility as an extension of the same excellence in care that they have come to expect from the hospitals of Community Healthcare System – Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart,” said Donald P. Fesko, CEO, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc., parent company to the healthcare system.

“Each of our hospitals are accredited Primary Stroke Centers and serve as a starting point for stroke patients,” Fesko said. “Studies suggest that for many post-stroke patients, intensive inpatient rehabilitation treatment at an inpatient rehabilitation facility may be the best choice, resulting in enhanced functional outcomes with a shorter length of stay and higher discharge rate. This same high standard of care also applies to patients recovering from neurological conditions and joint replacements and others who need care in a rehabilitative setting.”

“However, the Community Stroke and Rehabilitation Center houses more than rehabilitation therapies,” he said. “The outpatient center will offer nearly every outpatient and immediate care medical service a family may need - all at one location and all without a hospital stay.”

Community Healthcare System medical professionals will provide urgent care, full lab and X-ray services, and testing using latest generation diagnostic technology, such as MRI, CT and ultrasound. As services are fully developed, specialists in cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and orthopedics will further broaden the scope of health, wellness and preventative care available to the community.

The first floor will house immediate care, radiology, laboratory services, outpatient therapy services including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy and physician offices.

Second floor plans call for physician offices and a Women’s Diagnostic Center. The Women’s Diagnostic Center will offer mammography, bone density scanning and other services and will offer the same outstanding care found at the diagnostic centers affiliated with Community Healthcare System hospitals in Munster, East Chicago and Hobart.

The third and fourth floors will offer 40 private rooms for inpatient rehabilitation care and activity/gym rooms with an apartment for activities of daily living. Therapies provided on these floors are for complex stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurological conditions and spinal cord treatments.

“This center is the only freestanding dedicated rehabilitation center in Northwest Indiana with outpatient therapies present to complement that care,” said Craig Bolda, Vice President Acute Rehabilitative Services for Community Healthcare System. “It’s all about patient access and convenience. Instead of having to travel a distance for care, residents will have those services right in their own community.”

A healing garden will offer a place where patients and their families can spend time outside and enjoy nature that can aid in recovery.

“The healing garden is designed to provide an alternative environment for patients to reflect, benefit from therapy and is part of the recovery process,” Bolda said. “In fact, we optimized the floor plans based on input from our physicians and staff to make sure the design would be friendly for everyday workflow.”

“We want everyone who walks through the doors to feel welcome as they enter calm, soothing surroundings,” Bolda said. “Our ultimate goal is to deliver top quality patient care in a comfortable safe environment.”
