The Power of Potential held yesterday attracted over 250 people to Aberdeen Manor in Valparaiso to hear incredible and empowering stories of how individuals with disabilities have overcome challenges, exceeded goals, and maximized their potential. Opportunity Enterprises' annual Celebration of Achievement was hosted by Jerry Davich and sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, Indiana Beverage, The Times Media Company, Urschel Laboratories, and the generous customers of Strack & Van Til.
Guests were greeted by an on-site Simply Amazing Market featuring popcorn, fudge, and OE client painted ceramics all available for sale. The market also made amazing chocolate and caramel dipped pretzel rods drizzled in gold and silver as favors to highlight the special occasion and made possible by AM Stabilizers sponsorship. Guests mingled and enjoyed coffee as they arrived.
Once the program began, all ears were attuned to the incredible stories of each of the award winners and the amazing potential each realized. Host Jerry Davich made all feel welcome with his engaging anecdotes throughout the program. Advocate awards were given to Oak Partners (Business Partner of the Year), Christopher Runnion (Jeanne Beard Volunteer of the Year), and Christie Thomas (Jessica Wolfe Outstanding Direct Support Professional of the Year). Client of the Year Awards were given for each program to Dan Michalak (Enriching Possibilities), Austin Blackman (JobSource), Jennifer Niewinski (Daily Living Skills), Nancy Adams (QUEST), Linda Long (Renewed Horizons), and Max Danko (Business Services).
Each award recipient accepted their award with family and staff close by. There was no shortage of tears as stories of overcoming challenges underlined each client's amazing successes. Audience members found inspiration in the stories of a client's first words, first steps, and first job - the first of many first yet to come when their potential expands. Parents heaped thankfulness filled with emotion on the staff that serves each client providing a few hours of respite for the families each day.
An In Memoriam section of the program highlighted beloved clients who had passed away over the previous year. In addition, as OE is celebrating 50 years of service throughout the year, a special 50th-anniversary video was shown. To wrap the program, OE Board Member and father of an OE client, Neil Samahon gave a poignant call to guests to join the OE ELM Donor monthly giving program explaining how just a few dollars a month adds up over time to make a big impact on a client.
Host Jerry Davich summed up the event this way, "It is in times like this that I realize that I am the challenged one." The Power of Potential is just one way OE showcases the Amazing Clients, Staff, and Community they are privileged to serve.
