recycleMunicipal representatives from Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties interested in learning more about municipal compost site operations are invited to attend “Composting: The New Waste Management,” a free educational seminar, sponsored by the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County, Homer Tree Service Inc., and Vermeer Midwest.

The event is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, at Strongbow Inn, 2405 E. U.S .30, Valparaiso. The class includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Preregistration is required by calling Therese Davis, (219) 405-9765.

Streets and public works municipal representatives, compost site operators, or others wanting to learn tips and industry practices will be provided with information on subjects like feedstock quality control, odor management, “good neighbor” practices/communications and more, presented by Steve Christman, who is certified in both compost and landfill operations by the Solid Waste Association of North America. Plenty of networking opportunities will also be available.

Christman operates municipal compost sites in northeast Indiana and has been a member of SWANA for 17 years, serving six years on its national board.
