Chief’s Email – Pikes Peak!

Good Evening! portage-police-department

Last week I had the opportunity to make a drug awareness presentation at a company located in Colorado Springs. Their building happened to be located near Pike's Peak and for a first time visitor, it was an amazing thing to see. For those of you who have never been to Colorado, it is a trip worth making. Besides enjoying the sights, I met some very nice folks at the company that I visited. In fact, some of them have joined the "Chief's Email" and so we can now add Colorado residents to the subscription list!

While much of what we address at times pertains only to Portage and the area, there are those emails in which we discuss National concerns. Today is one of those communications that addresses both local and larger issues. I have attached a document that was forwarded to me from the United States Attorney's Office, Northern District of Indiana. It pertains to what actions you may want to consider if you find yourself in a building with an "Active Shooter"- by that I mean someone who not only possesses a firearm, but is actually shooting and is attempting to hurt people. It can happen anywhere and of course we experienced it first hand a few weeks ago here in Portage. Although at least one shot was fired, fortunately no one was injured --- we were lucky!

Please open the attachment and look it over, hopefully you will never need it.

Scams

The Better Business Bureau has passed along a couple of scams that you might want to be on the watch for!

  1. The BBB does not - and never will - offer lotto winnings. Thousands of dollars have been lost by consumers who believed they had won a sweepstakes when called or emailed by a person pretending to be with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). BBB does not run contests or lotteries and does not call people to let them know they've won one.
  2. Calls have been received by consumers from collection agencies, threatening federal charges if money owed wasn't paid right away. Should you receive calls like this, report them to the BBB right away. We will verify the legitimacy of them, and beware of high pressure tactics that scammers use to try and get at your hard-earned money!
  3. A consumer received a call from an IRS representative, stating he owed back taxes. The IRS does not make collection calls.
  4. Beware of emails purportedly from DHL. --"The courier service was not able to deliver your parcel at your address" due to a mistake in your address, it is a scam. DO NOT under any circumstances open the attachment. It is a virus and will infect your computer. Should you receive this email, delete it right away!
  5. Calls from Kohls or are they? A consumer received 6 calls from Kohls, requesting her Social Security Number. She contacted management at Kohls, and they have not authorized anyone to make such calls to consumers nor would they. Beware of all unsolicited calls from anyone asking for your SSN!
  6. Free gas grill from Home Depot. A resident in Auburn received a call from Home Depot, telling her she had won a gas grill and requested her social security number and other personal information. Out of concern, she called Home Depot. They reported that no gas grill was being awarded and that no one on their behalf was making calls, requesting personal information.

In closing may I remind you that if it does not feel right, it is likely is not right. Call the police and let them figure it out.
