Chief’s Email – Christmas Donations

Merry-MealsIn my last email, I invited all who wished to obtain charitable funding to contact me and I would forward it to all in time for Christmas. Well, December 25th is fast approaching and so I wanted to get this out sooner rather than later. I have listed the 3 organizations that have asked for your help. I thank and congratulate all of them for the good work they accomplish. Feel free to contact them with any questions you may have.

Merry Meals is a charitable organization providing food to needy families in Northwest Indiana. This group previously coordinated our effort to provide for the needs of those impacted by the hurricane that devastated Joplin, Missouri this past May. This December they will attempt to gather support to feed 250 families. They not only ask for your support, but ask that you provide them with the names of any families that may need their assistance. There website is listed above or you may contact Christy Berry at cberry4219@ameritech.net

They will also be hosting a fund raiser on December 2nd at the Westchester Lanes in Chesterton, $10 a ticket to bowl or $5 if you care to just drop in and join in on the fun. They will have 2 bands playing and raffle gifts will be handed out to the lucky ones. I understand a 31 inch color television is among the raffle gifts

This organization is involved in a daily effort of providing assistance to the needy families here in Portage with their rent and/or utility bills. They also assist Porter County residents with basic need to maintain their housing, monetary assistance is greatly appreciated. They do rely upon support from religious and other types of organizations in the area as well as grants when they can obtain them and they hope for help from people such as yourself. Those who seek assistance from this organization must first meet with the Township Trustee

Union Township Needy Families

Send donations to:
Mr. Mike Rosta
Union Township Middle School
599 West 300 North
Valparaiso, Indiana 46385

For additional information contact: Mr. Mike Rosta (219) 759-2562 mrosta@union.k12.in.us

Mr. Rosta has run this program for many years. He and his team provide a “Lunch with Santa” program for Union Township families in need. After a ham and turkey luncheon, Santa arrives and hands out toys to the kids and the families are also provided with clothing items and food baskets, all provided by donations. Last year 239 children from 95 families benefited from this program at a cost of $12,000. This is the 15th year of the program and due to the economy, unfortunately, the number of families in need continues to grow.

They need your support and it is requested that your checks be made payable to Mr. Mike Rosta and mailed to the school. I am personally aware of this program, it is a lot of work, but well worth it!

city_of_portageI will be in touch before Christmas, until then, if it does not seem right, it likely is not right. Call the police and let them figure it out, that is what they get paid to do.
