Car Wash Competition to Clean Up for United Way

mc-police-car-wash-united-way26The Michigan City Area Schools, the Michigan City Police Department and the Michigan City Fire Department are vying to see who can raise the most money for United Way of LaPorte County during a car wash competition Friday, Sept. 27.

The friendly rivalry started three years ago and has become bigger and better each year, as the three groups try to out scrub each other. The ultimate winner is United Way of LaPorte County and its 22 partner agencies, says Kris Pate, United Way executive director.

“We really value the efforts these community partners put forth each year on behalf of our community,” Pate said. “The car wash is a fun way to raise funds in support of those in our area that need our help.”

Police Department officers and volunteers will be washing vehicles from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police station, 102 W. 2nd Street, for a minimum donation of $5 per vehicle. Chief Mark Swistek is hopeful they can “wash out” the competition this year. “This year our overall goal is to raise more than $1,500, with all proceeds going to the United Way,” he said. “Rumor has it that a secret company is going to donate $1,000 to have their vehicle washed.”

Swistek will be grilling hamburgers for volunteers and encourages friends and associates to assist with the police department’s efforts.

Mark Baker, public relations officer for the Michigan City Fire Department, said members of Union Local 475 will be at the fire station at Cleveland Ave. and U.S. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. He said the union members look forward to volunteering their labor on behalf of the United Way of LaPorte County.

The Michigan City Areas Schools administrators and staff will be at MCK Car Wash, 1549 S. Woodland Ave., from 2 to 6 p.m. Car wash owner Michael McKervey has donated the facility and Well Apex is donating cleaning supplies. MCAS personnel and volunteers will be washing, drying and also vacuuming vehicles.

Sherri Silcox, program manager for MCAS Safe Harbor program, said MCAS came up with the theme “Pirates with a Purpose” to help boost their total treasure this year. Capt. Ed Beutner and his brand new pirate ship will provide entertainment. While waiting for their vehicles, drivers will be able to purchase “buck-an-ear” corn, “scurvy” hot dogs, and “pirate grog” – all for $1 each.

MCAS Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins said her staff and volunteers are looking forward to the annual tradition of friendly competition with the police and fire departments. They will ask drivers to make a contribution of any amount.

“It's great fun, and the funds our groups all raise for United Way provide many essential supports to our students and their families,” she said. “There will simply be no excuse for a dirty car in Michigan City on September 27th!”

Those who are unable to take part in the car wash event are encouraged to donate to the United Way of LaPorte County by visiting www.unitedwaylpc.org or calling 219-210-3534. Throughout the year, United Way mobilizes the caring power of the community to improve people’s lives. It partners with 22 agencies that provide programs and assistance to meet basic needs of people in La Porte County.
