Candace’s Region Rotary Round-Up

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Over the years, Rotarians have taken on global causes ranging from literacy and peace to water and health, but most often, it is the work done locally that has the greatest impact on you, the community members reading this article.

Local initiatives such as scholarships for high school students, cleaning up of local parks and gifts of time, talent and treasure to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations are all the foundation of the Club’s motto: “Service Above Self”

Lifer, Candace Arvin, joined the efforts of the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club in 2015 as a way to give back to the community she grew up in. Today, she brings you the region’s Rotary Recap to shine a light on all of the great things happening at Clubs in and around NW Indiana!

Here’s your Rotary Recap: On Thursday September 21st, the Rotary Club of Michigan City took a field trip to the Michigan City Fire Department where chief, Randy Novak, was pleased to give an update. Most recently, the Michigan City Fire Department received a federal grant of $718,468 which will allow them to hire six additional firefighters!

In addition to fire protection, Michigan City Fire Fighters respond to medical emergencies and perform fire inspections on all businesses. The public information department visits schools and community gatherings to promote fire prevention and education. They also assist other agencies at seasonal special events to ensure public safety.

Attendees to the meeting this day were fortunate to take part in a demonstration of the department’s new T-Rex articulating platform fire engine. The T-Rex is the fastest and most powerful articulating platform in the industry. Its on-board CAN-bus electronic system provides the speed to allow firefighters to set the stabilizers, raise the aerial 115’ in the air and rotate 90 degrees in less than 95 seconds!

These new additions to the department’s resources will be vital as they look to achieve their mission of ensuring that citizens and visitors are protected from fire, medical emergencies and hazardous conditions that threaten to harm the community. This mission will be accomplished through a commitment to rigorous training, continuing education, and diligent enforcement of fire prevention measures.

The Michigan City Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 11:45am at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts located at 101 W Second St. Interested in joining? Send an email to membership@mcrotary.org
