Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, will be the keynote speaker on Saturday, Feb. 6th at the Fourth Annual Quentin P. Smith Brunch at Calumet College of St. Joseph. Superintendent Ritz is dedicated to working with educators, families, policy makers, business leaders and community-based organizations to achieve a goal of building an equitable, high quality education system that is focused on student-centered accountability. Her election in 2012 epitomized what a grass roots movement could accomplish.
The goal of the annual brunch is to raise funds for the Quentin P. Smith Endowed Chair in Science. This chair has enabled the CCSJ science program to grow into a nationally recognized program. Their project was one of three nationally to be chosen for the International Space Station and a number of students have won national recognition for their experiments regarding Alzheimer’s Disease.
The brunch honors Quentin P. Smith, who served as a Tuskegee Airman during World War II and returned to the Calumet Region to educate and mentor generations of students as a teacher, guidance counselor, and principal. He also served as a Trustee of the College from 1969 through 2003.
The brunch will be held from 10:30 – 1:30 at 2400 New York Avenue. Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased by calling 219-473-4318 or development@ccsj.edu. Reservations are required by January 29, 2016.
