Entries Can Be “Born Ugly” or “Made Ugly”
Do you own a lamp that your family and friends find hideous or think you have what it takes to create the ugliest lamp? Enter it into the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority’s Ugly Lamp Contest, now through Nov. 18, and have the chance to win the iconic leg lamp just like Mr. Parker’s “major award” from the holiday movie classic, “A Christmas Story.” Lamps can be dropped off at the Indiana Welcome Center during normal business hours Monday through Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In the 1983 holiday film, Mr. Parker wins a leg lamp as a “major award” from a contest in the newspaper and proudly displays it in the front window of the family’s living room until Mrs. Parker “accidentally” breaks it. The leg lamp has become an iconic feature of the movie ever since.
Visitors may vote on the ugliest lamp from two categories: "Born Ugly" and "Made Ugly." Voting will run from Nov. 19 through Dec. 14 and winners will be announced on Dec. 16 at the Indiana Welcome Center. All entries will be displayed through Jan. 3, 2016.
The Ugly Lamp Contest is part of the “A Christmas Story” Comes Home exhibit, which is presented in agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “A Christmas Story” Comes Home features six animatronic window displays depicting scenes from the holiday film.
The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 7, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016, in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall at the Indiana Welcome Center. The Indiana Welcome Center is located at the intersection of I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue South in Hammond; only 30 minutes from downtown Chicago and two hours north of Indianapolis.
