During the month of February, Student Council members at Aylesworth Elementary school in Portage helped those who need it the most: other children fighting childhood cancer. They raised funds by holding a “Penny War Challenge” at the school.
The Penny War Challenge was a two-week long event that raised money for children suffering from early childhood leukemia and lymphoma and their families. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, an Indianapolis-based organization, has been quite impressed in the past with the contributions that Aylesworth students and families collect during this event.
Students are given a box to fill with loose change or dollar bills if possible. The money can be personally donated or collected from friends, family and neighbors. The school offers a collection site every morning, staffed by Student Council members who collect and record donations. All classes in a grade level work together as a team to raise the most money. The members read announcements daily, updating the students of the totals. A pizza party was provided for the winning grade level.
This year the students raised a grand total of $1504.00. The winning grade level was First Grade with over $400 collected.
