Annual PHS Concert is a Healthy Helping of Holiday Cheer

The annual Portage High School Holiday Choir Concert was a success this year with a bigger crowd than ever. The choirs’ performances wowed the audience and put everyone in the holiday spirit.

“I think the concert went fabulous. Everyone remembered their parts and Mr. Riegle didn't fall off the stage,” Holly Bussler, PHS student and choir member, said.

The choirs’ dedication has been pulling through nonstop. To prepare for this concert, the students began to work on it since mid-October. They worked constantly on difficult pieces of music perfecting every note and counting each rhythm down to make this night a success.

“A lot of time went into practicing my songs, vocal lessons and just coming together as a class to be prepared,” Marisol Barajas, PHS choir member, said.

Although there was a plentiful amount of new music performed, the Hallelujah Chorus was one tradition that the PHS choir just could not pass up.

“It’s just like a family reunion! It’s really nice to see my former students come back and sing with us again," Aaron Riegle, PHS choir director, said. "It’s just like old times from the years passed directing them and seeing them sing, it’s really moving.”

Riegle continues to make sure that they do different things whether it is competition or concerts. By having the choir sing a variety of music from different types of traditions, folks, and genres, Riegle attempts to offer something for everyone’s interests.

“We’re getting ready for the solo and ensemble season, and that will go until the beginning of February. Then we have another concert in March for the upcoming Spring Concert,” Riegle said.
