Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Raises $1.5 Million Statewide

Largest Fundraiser Dedicated to Alzheimer’s Disease Care, Support and Research Programs

AlzheimersAssociationDuring September and October, thousands of Hoosiers joined the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter Walk to End Alzheimer’s in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. Participants in 13 walks across the state raised more than $1.5 million to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.

"It is an inspiration to witness such tremendous support from Hoosiers across the state. With more than 10,000 walkers and over $1.5 million raised, this year's Walk to End Alzheimer's was a success," said Heather Hershberger, Alzheimer's Association Great Indiana Chapter Executive Director. "The funds raised will provide care and support for those affected by Alzheimer's and help fund Alzheimer's research."

This year’s walks were held in Anderson, Bloomington, Columbus, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Merrillville, Michigan City, Richmond, South Bend, Terre Haute and Warsaw. Each walk contributed to the statewide goal. Without the support of each community and statewide sponsors, American Senior Communities, Eli Lilly and Company and Kittle's Furniture, the $1.5 million goal would not have been attainable.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants heard families from each community share personal experiences with the disease, which moved nearly 2,500 to become advocates to help with public policy efforts at home and in Washington, D.C. Walkers also signed up to become involved in Alzheimer’s Association TrialMatch®, a free service that connects persons with Alzheimer's, caregivers, families and physicians to clinical trials based on personal criteria and location.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In Indiana alone, there are 120,000 people living with Alzheimer’s.
