Alzheimer’s Association Presents Caregiver Conference on June 28

AlzheimersAssociationThe Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is proud to present the Northwest Indiana Area Caregiver Conference on Friday, June 28, 2013. The conference is designed to educate both family and professional caregivers who would like to enhance their knowledge of Alzheimer’s and their caregiving skills.

The presenter for the Caregiver Conference will be Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, a Dementia Expert who trains and consults for agencies, facilities and families. She started her career as a direct caregiver over 35 years ago. Ms. Snow has taken care of two family members with dementing illnesses and the combination of her ‘been there-done that’ skills and her formal training give Teepa the credibility and experience to help caregivers with tried-and-true solutions.

The conference will start with "Managing Behavior: Start With Yourself." This session will help caregivers recognize and appreciate the role that their behaviors, words, actions and reactions play in the behaviors that are typically seen in people living with dementia. Emphasis will be placed on providing learners with alternative approaches and responses that are effective in promoting more positive interactions and outcomes. The goal is to help caregivers manage their own behaviors to change patterns rather than focusing on trying to get the person with dementia to “behave themselves.” Other sessions include:

  • Music Using Music – How to Make it Work, If You Are Not A Music Therapist
  • Improving Your Hands-On Skills For Giving Care.
  • Humor And Caregiving – Learning How To Laugh!
