A Spark for Change: My “Dear Pie” List

sparkforchange rotator2-newLast week in class, my students and I read "Dear Pie." It is a letter the famed F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote to his twelve-year-old daughter who was away at summer camp. In it, he details a list of things he feels she needs to worry about, to not worry about, and to think about.

This story launched the best discussion my classes have had this year. They grappled with the list for the entire class period, and we discussed what should stay on the lists and what needs to be removed. It was the kind of day teachers dream of having with their students. Afterward, we made our own lists. I thought that my article for this week should be my very own "Dear Pie" list.

Worry about...

Worry about purpose.
Worry about empathy.
Worry about kindness.
Worry about courage.
Worry about being authentic.
Worry about daring greatly.
Worry about character.
Worry about acceptance.
Worry about truly listening to others.
Worry about learning from your mistakes.

Don't worry about...

Don't worry about pleasing others.
Don't worry about gossip.
Don't worry about popular opinion.
Don't worry about fitting in.
Don't worry about the people in your past.
Don't worry about the future.
Don't worry about comparison.
Don't worry about finding love.
Don't worry about making a fortune.
Don't worry about those who don't worry about you.

Things to think about...

Think about if you are doing things that fill you up and utilize your talents and passions.
Think about if you have the right people surrounding you.
Think about what you can do to make the world a better place.
Think about if you're being a good role model for those who look up to you.
Think about if you're in the arena or the cheap seats.

Go be great,
