A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Sandra Corso

Sandra-CorsoPortage High School health teacher, Sandra Corso, has been teaching for twenty-five years, twenty of those years spent at PHS. Twenty of those years were spent as a Physical Education teacher, and five of her most recent years have been spent teaching Health.

Throughout her teaching career, Corso has coached softball, basketball, swimming, synchronized swimming, track, gymnastics, and tennis, dance, lifeguarding, and volleyball.

I really enjoyed coaching and teaching those oddball sports that are executed individually such as gymnastics and swimming,” Corso said.

Although Corso’s coaching days have reached an end, her love for teaching still drives her to continue with her career as an educator.

Corso credits her past high school Physical Education teachers for inspiring her to become who she is today.

I had two physical education teachers in high school that were awesome. They devoted about 95 percent of their time to students and they had an awful lot to do with me being a PE teacher,” Corso said.

Along with the inspiration of her teachers and professors, Corso has always had her family to support and encourage her life along the way.

Growing up, I had a single mother who was an excellent role model. She always encouraged my brothers and I to excel in our education and always to work hard in what we did. Now I have a family that is extremely supportive, my husband and two daughters have been behind me all the way through,” Corso said.

One of Corso’s most proud experiences of teaching at Portage include being chosen twice by students to accompany them on the Natural Helpers field trip.

I’ve had a really good experience teaching here at PHS, I like the students a lot. I’ve had opportunities to work in other school systems, but I really do like the students here the best. I also like that PHS is a big enough school to be able to have the resources to teach what I enjoy,” Corso said.
