A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Ryan McCoy

A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Ryan McCoy

Even before he started to work there, Ryan McCoy was already living in the Port of Portage. He worked for another company that was based out of the Port, so he knew the ins and outs of the area. As the years progressed, McCoy was promoted to the Port Director of the Ports of Indiana Burns Harbor Port in Portage. The Burns Harbor Port is a governmental agency, so there is a bit of politics and some corporate work that goes into the job. There are three different ports within the organization: Burns Harbor, Jeffersonville, and Mount Vernon.

“As the Port Director, I am in charge of the 600-acre property. We function as the land agent in the management organization for the state-owned port property. We lease the property and the parcels to different entities, or we have license agreements for the use of the state-owned assets,” McCoy said.

McCoy’s favorite thing about being the Port Director is the variety in his day-to-day. He enjoys doing and learning new things and enjoys being able to make a difference while also doing something that he finds interesting.

“I find that the diversity in what I do is the most interesting. I don’t do the same thing every day, and I rarely do the same thing twice. On one day, I could be dealing with a customer service issue, the next I could be doing something with business development. The next day I could be doing something regarding a personnel matter, like hiring or counseling someone. The possibilities are endless while working on the governmental side of things. I get a whole new perspective being on the public side of the business that I didn’t know much about when I worked almost 21 years in private industries,” McCoy said.

Aside from working, McCoy enjoys spending time with his family: a wife and two children. As a family, they enjoy golfing, his wife being in the Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) and working as the director and an instructor at Sand Creek Country Club. His two children are also involved in the sport, both having played most of their lives.

“My biggest priority is my family; they are a huge part of my life outside of work. Everything that I do revolves around my family. Our hobbies consist mainly of golf. My wife is the director and instructor at Sand Creek Country Club. My oldest daughter is on the women’s golf team at Valparaiso University. My youngest daughter has been playing golf since she was just two years old. We go to Florida almost every year and always try to find a new course to play on,” McCoy said.

Outside of his family and golf, McCoy enjoys working on home projects, cherishing the quiet time that comes with it.

“I love just working around the house, doing small home improvement projects. That’s my other hobby. I really just enjoy the quiet time to do that,” McCoy said.

McCoy thrives to make a difference every day by working hard at his job and providing for his family.
