A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Nick Jordan

Nick-1Balancing a job, advanced placement classes, athletics and managing Portage High School’s yearbook staff (the Legend) sounds impossible for most people, but not for PHS Legend Editor-in-Chief Nick Jordan. With all these responsibilities, Jordan is still able to manage his time wisely to be as efficient as he possibly can.

“I like to work consistently, every moment that I have available. I’m usually doing something, I don’t get very much time to sit down and chill like many other people do,” Jordan said.

Jordan is a crew member at Culver’s in Portage. Along with being a crew member, he also has more responsibility as a trainer. Jordan trains new workers with PHS senior Taylor Searcy. With a higher ranking at work comes more obstacles to overcome.

“I would say the biggest challenge for me is trying to balance the work, and making sure that everything is being done at a high standard,” Jordan said.

When Jordan was in just sixth grade, he was inspired to join his middle school yearbook staff and has been passionate about it ever since. After seeing his older sister, Rachel Jordan, become Editor-in-Chief of her high school yearbook staff, he knew that he would soon follow the same path.

For the making of the 2011-2012 Legend, Jordan was editor of the Clubs’ staff. The book that was made last year themed “Say It” was nominated as a Hoosier Star Finalist.

“It was just an honor to be a finalist,” he said “When I heard the news, every ounce of my whole body was just thrilled.”

Nick-2Being the Editor-in-Chief of the PHS Legend brings some hardships, but Jordan said he is glad to be able to lead in something that he loves so much in a field which he has so much of a passion for.

Although Jordan has always had a passion for yearbook and design, he credits his yearbook adviser Melissa Deavers-Lowie and older sister Megan Jordan for leading him onto that path.

“My older sister Megan Jordan is my number one role model. She achieved outstanding grades, she was involved in a whole bunch of athletics, she graduated top in her college at IU. She’s such an inspiration to me,” Jordan said.

Living in the city of Portage has also had a huge impact on Jordan’s life. Jordan said that Portage is large enough to have so much diversity and so many cultures that he gets to have a variety of life experiences. Portage is a place that Jordan can always call home.

“I really couldn’t imagine growing up anywhere better,” Jordan said.
