A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Kenyota Rollins

kenyota-rollinsCaptain of the Portage High School football team, Kenyota Rollins is more than just an outstanding athlete. As a senior, he continues to push himself to be a well-rounded student taking on extracurricular activities and schoolwork.

Rollins is involved in PHS’s football program, National Honor Society, has a grade point average of 3.7 and hopes to graduate with an Academic Honors diploma.

On September 27th, PHS titled Rollins “Mr. Football” at its 2013 homecoming.

“It was a big surprise- it felt like all my hard work paid off,” Rollins said.

kenyota-rollins-2Rollins football career began his sophomore year of high school; since his sophomore year he has been leading the team in tackles. As both a sophomore and junior Rollins was an All-Area, All-Conference athlete at PHS.

“This has to be the best team I’ve ever played on overall these last three years,” says Rollins, “I would’ve never played football without my best friend, Hasheem Simpson, to encourage me.”

Rollins hopes to continue his football career in college as well. He has gotten football scholarships from Indiana University, Indiana State University, and Ivy League schools.

“I’ve got division one scholarships to play football, I don’t know where I’m going to go yet. I’ve got a couple of offers, it’s tough to say,” Rollins said.

The sport of football has impacted his life tremendously. Rollins claims that it has changed the way he thinks of life for the better.

“It’s more than just a game, it teaches you respect and how to trust others; you can’t do it by yourself,” Rollins said.
