“Despite having a strong business career, I always have had a strong desire to be connected to my community and serve it,” Asbell said. “I’m so thankful that I have the opportunity to be able to help others today so that they can live happy lives.”

Asbell recently hit five years of cancer survival. He had about with esophageal cancer in late 2014 through 2015.

“As I look back over an extended period of time, I’ve overcome so many obstacles like homelessness and alcoholism,” Asbell said. “I recognize that the people who have walked alongside me are the reason why I was able to get where I am today. After all the experiences I have had, I really want to pay it forward to work towards a vision I have for myself and my community.”

Asbell’s role in the community clergy connected him to many of the pastors and leaders in the community, which helped lead to him becoming involved with the Board of the Promise Foundation. The Family Promise Foundation works with a lot of churches in the community to help homeless families, and he assists by serving as Treasurer.

“Being on the Board is a great outlet for connecting with other leaders in our community,” Asbell said. “There are some awesome people in the network and having a chance to work with them is humbling. They really care about helping others getting their lives back on track and sustaining the Region’s quality of life.”

“I’ve experienced enough of both sides of the coin, so I’m aware that life is fragile yet has the potential to be incredibly strong,” Asbell said. “After all these experiences and working with all these people who believed in me and supported me throughout the years, I’m proud of myself for making decisions that better both myself and others.”
