A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Bill Kresal and Billie the dog

Bill Kresal has become well-known around his community for his thoughtful heart and willingness to give back. Kresal has received a little help from his side-kick, his dog Billie, along the way.

“There's so much to be said about what Billie can give back to the community by going to the nursing homes or assisted care; these people rarely have visitors. Just to see the look on their faces when Billie is so affectionate towards them is amazing,” said Kresal.

Kresal found Billie in March. She had been through so much by the time he found her.

“Billie was locked in a cage for the first five years of her life, locked in a barn. She never saw sunlight and was forced to pump out puppies until she couldn't. Before she was rescued, the vet wanted to euthanize her. She has so much love in her heart, and there's so much there that we have to share with others,” said Kresal.

One of the most special things about Billie is her ability to sense what some are going through. Whether it's at the fire department, the nursing home, or anywhere around the community, Billie continues to comfort those she feels needs it most.

“Billie actually has a sense for those with autism, and we have had a couple experiences with that where people with autism were totally withdrawn in a fetal position. When Billie senses this, she very gently comes up and gives them a little nudge. They reach out and she gets a little bit more affectionate. There have been two occasions where she has brought someone with autism from a fetal position into laughing and smiling, enjoying her company,” said Kresal.

Kresal loves giving back to his community, and having a dog by his side makes the experience much more worthwhile.

“She is already making a huge impact around the community. We have gone to the fire department, and these guys really appreciate her company and her affection. I'm a former Army medic, so I can relate with the fire department and paramedics when they go out on calls. It is nice to have a soft spot where you can relax and not be on edge all the time,” said Kresal.

Throughout Kresal’s life, he has been able to seek those in need and use his free time to take a break from reality and bless others with the presence of Billie. That can go a long way for some. Life is so filled with ups-and-downs that sometimes people need something to take their mind off of things.

“There are always people in need – all you have to do is open your eyes. I am very blessed to have the opportunity to be able to give back. Not everybody has the chance. Not everybody has a dog like Billie in their life,” said Kresal.
