A Page in Washington DC: Half Way There!

Collin-CzilliI am sorry I haven’t written in a while, I have been really busy this week!

To start off, we went to the Washington Nationals game last weekend and it was a great time. The Nationals lost but it didn’t matter to me because I am a White Sox fan and neither team mattered to me, but it was a fun, and I must say expensive, time.

This work week was also interesting. If you have been following the news, or are just alive, you have heard of the debt ceiling and that it must be raised by August 2nd, or the country will begin to default on its obligations. What you may not know is that the ceiling has been raised around 70 times since the 1970’s, through both Republican and Democratic administrations with no problems. This is nothing new to Washington, it happened in 2007 without a problem, but the Tea Party is making this time different and more difficult. It has been interesting to listen to members defending allowing the country to default, because they are risking American jobs and America’s credibility in the market place. It must be raised, and I think it will, but the Republicans have used this opportunity to get a lot out of the President, putting many Americans in a state of worry.

On a brighter side, the Democratic Pages got to meet Nancy Pelosi this week. We all were greeted in the Rotunda of the Capitol and had a group photo with her. She then talked to us for about 15 minutes and took individual photos with us, something she has never done, according to our Page Supervisor. We will get a picture with John Boehner on the 26th.

Next week will be interesting. The House was supposed to go home for the week, leaving us pages with nothing to do. We were going to have movie days all week where we sit in the Cloakroom and watch movies while getting paid, but the Republicans decided to stay in, which means more work for us! That is ok though, I like the work.

And finally, today we went to see Merchant of Venice at the National Shakespeare Theater, and I loved the show! I normally can’t stand reading or watching Shakespeare, but this cast did a fantastic job, and I was interested the whole time. If you ever are in Washington and have a chance, try to go to a show, you will love it!

I look forward to seeing all of you when I get back in 21 days, yes, only 3 weeks left. The next 3 weeks will be exciting, but I can’t wait until I get home.
