#1StudentNWI: “Musicals, Prom, Exams, Oh My!” at Portage High School

The Teachings of God

Beginning on April 18, the students performed the musical, Godspell. Godspell is the retelling of Jesus’ teachings as told by the Bible. The musical is filled with fun, catchy numbers and a talented cast. Senior Matt Kiley starred as Jesus in the production.

The musical showed for two weeks. It began on April 18 and 19 and ended the following weekend on April 24 and 25.

Started from the Bottom, Now we’re here

On April 29, 30 students were awarded for their academic excellence at the Woodland Park banquet center. These students, known as the ACES, are in the top five percent of their class and will be leading the pack at graduation. During this banquet, the students were asked to choose a teacher that had a positive impact on their academic career. They then wrote letters and chose adjectives that described their teacher. The items were presented to them at the banquet along with a customary glass apple.

The teachers that were chosen for this prestigious honor, came from all over Portage Township. Some teachers, like Spanish teacher Linda Peda, came out of retirement for the banquet. The night was filled with laughter as the students and their teachers had a chance to talk over a dinner that was catered by Strack & Van Til.

Dance like No One is Watching

The Senior Prom took place on May 2 at the Porter County Expo Center. The dance entitled, A Red Carpet Affair, started at seven in the evening and did not end until eleven. The students made good use of their time.

Dressed to impress, the students made their grand entrance walking across a red carpet and prepared for a night of dancing and picture taking.

“I love seeing everyone dressed up,” senior Alyssa Rosales said. “I think knowing it's senior prom it reminded me to really have fun with the people that has made the past 4 years at PHS great.”

It truly was a night to remember.

It’s Time to Hit the Books

The Monday after prom, students hardly want to get out of bed, much less go to school. The same can be said for AP test takers, but nonetheless, they came to school with sharpened pencils ready to attack the AP Chemistry exam.

Carrie Brown’s AP classes were up bright early to enjoy a wholesome breakfast and a quick review before the test. The classes had been reviewing in preparation for the test for a few weeks and felt ready for the test when the time arrived.

Four hours of testing later, the students eagerly await for the scores to be released in July.

Student Shout out

This month’s student shout out goes to Shyann Mattis. She is a senior and is second in her class with a GPA of a 4.7775. Mattis said that her want to have a successful future is what motivates her to do well in school.

“The first block in building a promising future is creating a good foundation which, for me, is having a good education and performing the best that I can in school,” Mattis said.

Being second in her class, Mattis said, makes her feel as though she’s made the right choices throughout high school and that she’s put her priorities in the proper places.

“All of the hard work, dedication, and sacrificed time to my school work has finally paid off,” Mattis said.

Shyann will be attending Valparaiso University in the fall to major in chemistry.

Teacher Shout out

This month’s teach shout out goes to English teacher Mrs. Carrie Martin. Martin was recognized, along with 29 other teachers, at the ACES banquet that was held last month. She was nominated by senior Daniel Lin.

“I chose her because she [is] very thoughtful and caring,” Lin said. “I [had] her [my] sophomore and junior [years]. She’s very energetic in her teaching.”

That night, Martin left the banquet with a heartfelt letter, a glass apple, and a framed apple detailing all of the wonderful things that Lin thought described her.
