#1StudentNWI: Building the Future at the Porter County Career and Technical Center

1studentnwi-pcctc-futureHave you ever imagined what it would be like to have 150 8th graders touring the Career Center while juniors and seniors are also in class? The Career Center got a taste of this exact scenario on Friday, April 10th as 8th graders from both Kouts and Washington Township Schools were lead on guided tours throughout the Career Center.

At the beginning of the school year, two mentors were chosen from each vocational course and trained on how to lead a tour, answer questions, and provide accurate information to prospective students. The mentors received their training from Mrs. Kelli Ellis and Mrs. Kate Sorenson, who both serve as plentiful resources when inquiring about the Career Center.

The two schools were divided into 11 groups upon arriving at the Career Center. From there, they traveled to each classroom including the auto shop, health careers, entrepreneurship, and even went on the roof to see the solar panels designed by Career Center students.

At each destination, a student from the respective class was waiting to deliver a three-minute overview of the course and to answer any questions that may come up. All in all it was a successful day and as the students boarded the buses to head back to their schools, discussions of future plans could be heard. Even though they have a few years to decide what they want to do, the Career Center has made them aware of the opportunities that they have to discover their passion in a success filled environment.
