10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Skedaddle Time, Be Kind to Animals, and Cultural Festival

Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do!

It's Time to Skedaddle!
Come race with us! The Samaritan Skedaddle is an annual 5K Run/Walk to support the Samaritan Counseling Centers, Inc. in Northwest Indiana. The scenic 5K flat course starts and ends at the corner of 8th and Washington Street in downtown Michigan City. Runners and walkers will follow Pine Street to beautiful Washington Park, pass the historic Michigan City Lighthouse, the marina, and the harbor and then back on Washington to the finish line.

15th Annual Be Kind To Animals Celebration
The Porter County Animal Shelter has announced that will be hosting it's 15th Annual Be Kind To Animals Celebration on Saturday, April 28th. The event will include offerings from area Rescue Groups, Shelters, Veterinarians, Trainers, Groomers and Pet Supply Companies. Admission to the event is FREE. It is also a pet-friendly event for leashed animals, and includes discounted micro-chipping by Arbor View Animal Hospital and pet photographs by Pretty Paws Pet Photographers.

Festival to Highlight Cultures from Around the World
Join the Portage Youth Commission at the 2012 Cultural Festival on Sunday, April 29, 2012. At our second annual Cultural Festival, we will have food, arts and crafts, live performances, and information from other cultures that will simply enlighten you. Live performances featured are a dance from the Civic Dance Center, a dance and mini play from Portage High School's Anime Art Club, a bagpipe performance from the Irish booth owner, and much more!

Southlake Children's Choir Announces Exciting Spring Concert
Representing children from all over Northwest Indiana, Southlake Children’s Choir spring concert will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012. The ensembles of the Southlake Children's Choir will be performing a wide variety of music, including classical and folk music, spirituals, and Broadway show tunes, due to SCC’s upcoming performance trip to New York City.

Middle School Mania Features Battle of the Schools
On April 28, 2012, the YMCA will be holding another one of its Teen Night programs for Middle School children. Schools will face off in activities such as dodge-ball and basketball, as well as a variety of other fun games and challenges. There will be plenty of prizes and giveaways, and your children can even earn points toward a major prize, to be announced at the final Teen Night of the academic year, June 2.

PHS Art Students Empty Bowls Project
Portage High School’s art students and staff are busy preparing for The Empty Bowls project, an event designed to support the Portage Township Food Pantry. They are creating bowls and other pieces of art to be sold at the event held at the Portage High School West cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 28. The two middle schools and several of the elementary schools will provide art also.

National Rebuilding Day is Saturday, April 28
National Rebuilding Day marks Rebuilding Together's annual signature event when tens of thousands of volunteers across the country will team up with Rebuilding Together's affiliates to repair homes, revitalize communities and restore the lives of homeowners in need. Rebuilding Together Duneland and Portage will take place at various sites around the region this Saturday.

The Wedding Singer Continues on PHS Stage
The Portage High School spring musical continues this weekend on the stage of the PHS East Auditorium. The show describes the relationship between Robbie Hart, a wedding singer, and Julia Sullivan, a waitress at the reception hall where Robbie and his band regularly perform. Although they have to cross multiple hurdles, the two were meant for each other and eventually get married near the conclusion of the musical. Robbie, the male lead, was played by senior Jacob Cherry, while junior Rachel Stewart took the role of female lead as Julia.

All You Can Eat For Charity
The Schererville Lions Club will be hosting their annual all you can eat pancake breakfast at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Schererville. All of the proceeds from the pancake breakfast will be donated to the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation. The NICK Foundation provides assistance and counsel to families in Northwest Indiana and surrounding areas affected by childhood cancers.

PNC Students Present "Spoon River Anthology"
Purdue University North Central students will present their annual Readers' Theatre oral interpretation program on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. The "Spoon River Anthology" was published in 1915. It depicts life in the typical small rural Midwestern town. The deceased residents of Spoon River, a rural town in Illinois, speak from their graves on the hill. The "Spoon River Anthology" presents a realistic look at how people really are with pretenses down. The author shows how everyday people are able to weave a web of power and deception, how they twist and turn their own reality and how the grave is the ultimate equalizer.
