The Princess and the Pea story tells of a prince (Sam Lee) who, according to The Book of Wisdom, must embark on a 6 month long journey to find a suitable princess to marry. Although he meets many princesses along the way, there is something wrong with each one, and he returns home empty-handed. That night there is a terrible storm, and a young woman (Victoria Hooten) drenched with rain seeks shelter in the prince’s castle. She claims to be a princess, so the prince’s grandmother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by multiple mattresses and featherbeds. In the morning the guest tells her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by the lumpy, uncomfortable bed. The prince rejoices. Only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through such a quantity of bedding.
