10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Easter Egg Hunts, Ringing in Spring, and Poetry Slam

Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do!

2012 Ringing In Spring Race
Kick off the running season with the region's largest race of the spring on Saturday, April 7th! In its 18th year, the Ringing In Spring race will feature a 5K run/walk and new for this year, a 10K run. The 5K Prediction Walk will start a few minutes after the run and is a non-judged walk. Teams of five or more can enter in the team competition for either the 5K or 10K run and will be scored cross-country style. This year’s race course has been adjusted to feature a faster starting area that includes a straight takeoff down a wide road. The course is similar to the 2011 Ringing In Spring course and the new 10K features a double-loop.

FREE Easter Egg Hunt
Grab your Easter baskets and head to Indiana Elite (formerly Lisa’s Gymnastics) on Saturday, April 7th, 2012 at noon. This Easter Egg hunt will be like no other, as participants will be looking for hidden eggs amidst balance beams, and foam blocks and bars – OH MY! The Easter Bunny will be on hand for FREE pictures.

WiseWay to Host Easter Egg Hunt
Join us for our 13th annual WiseWay Easter Egg Hunt! Kids from ages 3 to 10 are invited to come out to all five WiseWay locations on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 7 am. Prizes and fun will be had for all!

Road to Life Church to Host Egg Drop
This Saturday, April 7th, 2012, at 1 pm, 20,000 Easter eggs filled with candy will be dropped from a helicopter, piloted by Brad Cavanaugh, Air One Custom Photography, over Friendship Park. A FREE event fun for all KIDS from 1-3 pm will include the BIG hunt, ginormous inflatable games, face-painting, & more!

Local Poetry Slam
First Fridays @ 5 continue at Lubeznik Center for the Arts on April 6 with a Poetry Slam hosted by writer, performer and humorist, J.W. Basilo. Anyone is welcome to perform but competitors must perform original work, of the performer's own construction, use no props, costumes or musical instruments, and pre-register first.

Join Portage First United Methodist in Observing Holy Week
Good Friday (April 6) is the day we remember Jesus' death on the cross. We will offer two services. The first one, at 12:10 p.m., is designed to be a quiet, meditative service meant to fit into your lunch hour. The evening service, at 7:00 p.m., is a traditional Tenebrae (darkness) service, recalling the story of Jesus' crucifixion in Scripture and song. Easter celebrations will be held at four different times.

Eye of the Beholder at the Southern Shore Art Association
Select artist members of the Area Artists Association of the Lubeznik Center for the Arts will exhibit at the Southern Shore Art Association Gallery in April 2012. The exhibit entitled “Eye of the Beholder II” will include new work by eighteen artists in a range of 2-dimensional media including oil, acrylic, photography and pastel. Join the artists on Friday, April 6, during the free Opening Reception at the Southern Shore Art Association Gallery from 5 – 8 pm.

Annual Tree Sale Perfect for Backyard Growers
Spring is here, and that means it’s time for green thumbs and taste buds to look forward to a garden full of delights. Purdue Extension-Porter County presents their Annual Fruit Tree Sale. If you do not pre-order your trees from Purdue Extension, and would just like to shop at the Annual Tree Sale, the public is invited to the 4-H Building at the Porter County Fairgrounds where Purdue Extension joins RC&D on Saturday, April 7, from 7:30am to 11:00am. Master gardeners from the Porter County Master Gardener Association and Purdue Extension professionals will be on site to give advice and answer questions on how to plant and care for the trees.

VHS Boys Golf Team Opens Season
The Valparaiso High School golf team will begin the 2012 season ranked among the state’s top teams, currently ranked eighth overall in the state of Indiana. The Vikings’ season kicks off officially on Saturday, April 7th as the Frosh/Sophomore team plays at the Lancer Invite, and JV/Varsity squads travel to Rochester, Indiana.

Gather Your "Peeps" and Celebrate Easter at T.J. Maloney's
After the Easter baskets and egg hunts, gather your “peeps” and hop over to T.J. Maloney’s Authentic Irish Pub for a special Easter Sunday Brunch. Operating under the premise that “Everyone is family in the House of Maloney,” there is no better place to get together with loved ones to share in the spirit of Easter. T.J. Maloney’s will feature a sprawling and decadent menu of traditional brunch items, along with many of the Pub’s signature dishes.
