10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Art Openings, Improv Comedy, and Auction Event

Classic Concert with a Pink Theme
The LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest pianist Andrius Zlabys and a special appearance by Nikia Hammonds-Blakely. An afternoon of classical music begins with a world-renowned pianist performing Beethoven's serene, Concerto No. 4 and ends with the bold and heroic Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius. Heroic on many different levels, this PINK concert is dedicated to breast cancer awareness. The orchestra is delighted to announce that those attending the concert wearing something pink will receive a special gift from Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital in the form of a coupon for a FREE routine mammogram for women and a Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for men.

St. Paul to Host Denim and Diamonds Gala Auction Event
St. Paul Catholic School is again hosting their elegant and exciting annual Gala Auction event! This year's Denim and Diamonds Gala will be held March 3, 2012, at County Line Orchard in Hobart. Doors open at 6 pm to a silent auction, followed by dinner at 7 pm and a live auction. Over 100 items will be available to bid on and various raffles will be held throughout the evening.

Come see CJ Jones, internationally known deaf comedian, performing live for the whole family ages 12 and up on Saturday, March 3, 2012! Come feel the laughter while CJ entertains his audience with visual imagery and storytelling, capturing his audience for both hearing and deaf alike! His amazing performance has been going strong for over 25 years.

Improv Comedy Show to Explore the Humor in Social Media
Explore the funny side of social media with this year's Mocha Madness "# Out the Madness"! VHS students will put on their annual improv event this weekend. The show features two teams, battling to make the audience laugh the most!

Howl at the Moon Event to Benefit Lakeshore PAWS
Get ready to Howl at the Moon for a good cause. On Friday, March 2, 2012, Lakeshore PAWS is hosting an unforgettable night of live music and fun at Chicago nightclub Howl at the Moon to raise money to support the organization’s local animal rescue efforts. This unforgettable night will feature live music, appetizers, and drinks at Howl at the Moon, a high-energy nightclub with unique rock ‘n’ roll dueling pianos and live performers who involve the audience in the fun.

“Earth and Ice” Works in Ceramics
Derek Walter, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Northwest will be exhibiting ceramic work at the Chesterton Art Center in March. Plan to join Derek for the opening and demonstration on Sunday, March 4 at from 2 – 4 pm.

“Pay What You Can Afford” Day at the Portage Resale Shop
On Saturday, March 3, all shoppers are free to fill their carts with what they need. When you check out, the shop will total it up, let you know what the original cost would be, and allow you to donate what you can afford for your purchases. We only ask you please be honest and responsible by taking only what you need. This allows us to help meet the needs of others as well.

Sample Artisan Edibles at Lubeznik Center's After-Hours Open House
A celebration of food will complement current exhibitions at Lubeznik Center for the Arts' First Friday @ 5 after-hours open house on March 2 from 5-8 p.m. Visitors to the Center will have an opportunity to taste a variety of local and organic items ranging from pasture raised meats to pastries ― and learn more about food and food production.

Join the Purdue Alumni Club to Cheer on the Boilermakers!
Attention all Purdue and IU Fans!! Want to see your team play? Want to help a great cause? Then come on down to Buffalo Wild Wings in Crown Point on Sunday, March 4th at 5pm to see the Purdue Boilermakers take on the IU Hoosiers in a basketball game not to be missed! The Purdue Alumni Club of Northwest Indiana along with the IU Alumni Association is hosting a food drive that will benefit our local food pantries. Bring in your canned goods and the winner of the event will be donating the proceeds the food pantry of their choice.
