Davich Discusses the Future of News at Portage Exchange Club

Jerry-Davich-1The Portage Exchange Club welcomed columnist/author/radio host Jerry Davich and his radio co-host Karen Walker to its January 30 breakfast meeting. Davich is well known in this area. He writes a metro column that appears almost daily in the Post-Tribune. He hosts two radio shows—“Casual Fridays” on Lakeshore Public Radio, 89.1 FM and “Out to Lunch” on WVLP 98.3. He speaks at numerous events and organizations.

Davich also has far-reaching connections. His book “Connections: Everyone Happens for a Reason” (2009) is available online at www.connectionsbook.com and at sites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble. He freelances for several national publications. He also travels across the country offering writing seminars to journalists. He has garnered over 30 awards for his writing.

Although he is still involved in “the nuts and bolts of news” as he referred to print newspapers, Davich definitely is a man of modern vision regarding newer technology. He blogs (http://blogs.post-trib.com/davich) and is on Twitter and Facebook.

Jerry-Davich-2Online news is not just the wave of the future. It’s here now. Everything is online and digital. People of your generation still like the feel of a newspaper in your hands. For younger people, it’s all web, web, web,” he said.

Davich shared several previously published columns with the club. One involved bullying and child abuse, a topic of great interest to the club that has as one of its national initiatives the prevention of child abuse.

He also addressed the question of the future of clubs like the Exchange Club.

Service organizations are declining all over. Who will carry the torch when you are gone? Is it a problem of devotion to civic duty not built into the next generation’s DNA? How can you attract young people to continue the work you’ve been involved in?
