Funds raised will help residents of Portage learn, grown and thrive
Every day, the Portage Township YMCA serves as a gathering place for the community. Kids pour in after school for sports, gymnastics, Zumbatomic and more. Seniors meet for Active Older Adult group exercise classes such as Blast to the Past and Gentle Yoga, computer classes and to connect with one another. To ensure that the Y can continue to provide Portage residents with life enhancing services, the Portage Township YMCA is launching its annual community support campaign “They Depend on Us, We Depend on You”.
As a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, financial gifts to the Y will help to advance programming and services that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. More importantly, gifts to the Portage Township YMCA make a direct impact on resident’s right here in Portage.
Last year, financial support made it possible for kids to have a safe place to learn and build confidence after school; for families to reconnect and grow together; provided children the opportunity to learn lifelong aquatic safety and swimming lessons, and gave 3-5 year olds the opportunity to be academically and socially prepared for their first day of Kindergarten. The Y also provides memberships to the Portage Police Dept., Portage Fire Dept., the intellectually challenged, families of deployed military, as well as providing support to the Portage Township Schools and area group homes.
“We all need the Y because our organization works every day to nurture the potential of kids, improve health and well-being and help neighbors support one another,” said Amber Alexander, Senior Program Director with the Portage Township YMCA. “With our community support campaign, we want more people to understand that we are more than where to go to exercise or swim – and that we rely on their financial support to do our vital work.”
This year, the Portage Township YMCA hopes to raise $67.000. The Portage Township YMCA has announced that Adam Burroughs, Porter County Supervisory Deputy Prosecutor will be the chair of the campaign with the help of Janis Regnier, Mike Sarver and Katrina Spence. Funds raised will provide memberships and program support for those in need. We hope to never turn anyone away who needs us. That is why we need your financial support to continue to keep that promise.
