Upcoming Programs & Activities at the Portage Parks Department

Belly Dancing Workshop Feel confident, sensual and beautiful! Come discover your exotic nature in this beginner-level workshop. Dress for fun. No experience necessary. The workshop takes place at the Portage Yacht Club on Wednesday, February 16 from 7:30pm – 9:00pm. Cost is $15/resident and $20/non-resident. Workshop is for ages 18+. Please register by the Monday before workshop.

Youth Indoor Tennis Program Children are encouraged to learn tennis while participating within a team environment. Our program will allow each child to maximize their opportunity for skill development through 45 minutes of instructional practice followed by 45 minutes of match play. There will be two divisions: 10 & under and 8 & under. Participants must provide their own racquet. No prior tennis experience required! Cost is $35/resident, $40/non-resident. Program is held on Wednesdays from February 23 - March 30 in Oakwood Grand Hall at Woodland Park. Register by February 18.

St. Patrick's Day Youth Camp Holiday crafts, story time, and a snack. March 5th from 1-3pm at Woodland Park, Hickory Hollow Room. Pre-register by February 22. Ages: 5 – 11. Cost: $12 / resident, $15 / non-resident. Min 7, Max 12

Scrapbooking Swap techniques and ideas with fellow scrappers. Bring your scrapbooks and supplies to put together albums, cards or any other paper crafts. Bring snacks to share. Upcoming session is February 25. The program will be held at Woodland Park from 6pm – 11pm. Cost is $12 per person.

Young Champions Youth Cheerleading A fun course designed for making friends while learning choreographed pom-pom and dance routines. No experience needed. Visit www.ycusa.org. Course begins on Monday, February 28th. Ages 4-6 will be from 5:30pm – 6:15pm; Ages 7-9 will be from 6:15pm – 7:00pm; Ages 10-12 will be from 7pm – 7:45pm; Ages 13+ will be from 7:45pm – 8:30pm. Classes are held at Woodland Park. Cost is $7 registration fee and $7 per class. Fees can be pre-paid on a class-by-class basis or all at once.

Woodland Park Preschool Signups Registration for fall 2011 opens to the public on March 1st. A non-refundable registration fee of $20 is required at sign up. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and your driver’s license number. Class fees are as follows… Monday-Wednesday-Friday classes are $70 per month or $630 per year for resident and $75 per month or $675 per year non-resident. Age determination is 4 years old by August 1st. Tuesday-Thursday classes are $60 per month or $540 per year for resident and $65 per month or $585 per year for non-resident. Age determination is 3 years old by August 1st.

Tumbling Tuesdays This tumbling program is a unique blend of basic tumbling and balance exercises. Children are allowed to safely explore their movements in a fun environment while learning and enhancing their physical abilities. This program also encourages and inspires their social skills, in structured and unstructured play. Next 6 week session begins Tuesday, March 1 at the Portage Yacht Club. Ages 2-4 is held at 5pm, ages 5-8 is held at 6pm. Cost is $35 for residents, $40 for non-residents. Sign up at Woodland Park by day before program begins.

Strike Busters Youth Bowling Children are invited to join us after school for this non-competitive afternoon of bowling. Bumper pads are available upon request. The next 6-week session begins Thursday, March 3 from 4:30pm – 5:30pm at Camelot Lanes. Register at Woodland Park by March 2. This program is for ages 4-12. Cost is $35/resident and $40/non-resident.

Portage CSI-Curious Kids Solving Crimes presented by Action Science Someone broke the law, and we’re gonna use science to find out whodunit! Participants will employ techniques the pros do to closely examine a crime scene, including interrogating witnesses, dusting for prints, using deductive reasoning and much more. Each participant receives their own special take-home project. Taught by Susan Peterson Friday, March 11th from 10:00-11:30am. $14 per child. Ages 6 and up. Minimum 8 / Max 25 (pre-register). Cornhole Tournament On Friday, March 18 at 7:00pm, we will be hosting a cornhole tournament at Woodland Park. Cost is $30 per team for 2 v. 2 double elimination. Tournament is for ages 18 & up. Register at Woodland Park before start of tournament. Winners receive 50% of entry fees, runners up receive 25%. Checks will be mailed third Thursday of following month. A cash bar will be available for those 21 & up.

Spring Youth Soccer Registration for Portage Parks' spring youth soccer league for ages 3-14 runs until April 1; season begins Saturday, May 7 at the soccer complex on the east side of Imagination Glen Park (access complex from U.S. Highway 149). Portage Parks' soccer program is designed to be a fun, recreational activity that emphasizes safety, sportsmanship, and skill development. Season will run seven weeks including tournament for ages 5yrs and older on the final week. Games are held morning to early afternoon. This program is dependent on volunteer parent coaches. No soccer experience is required and training will be provided. Register your child at the Portage Parks office (2100 Willowcreek Road, Portage). Cost is $40/resident and $45/non-resident. $5 discount for children after first. $10 late fee for any signups after April 1.

Spring Soccer Sponsors Needed Sponsor a spring soccer team for just $175 or get a discount by sponsoring both spring and fall seasons for only $300! Sponsors receive their company logo and information on the back of a team’s uniform.

Summer Adult Softball League Sign your team up for our competitive softball league. Rosters can only be picked up from Parks & Recreation office in exchange for a $100 deposit (in the form of cash, check or gift certificate). This is the ONLY way to secure a spot for your team. The balance and completed roster is due by April 1. If you fail to pay the balance by this deadline, the spot will be opened to other teams and your $100 deposit will NOT be refunded. Any team to pay a balance after the deadline will be charged an additional $50 late fee. The Chem Lab presented by Action Science Every child wants to explore the exciting world of chemistry, where color changes, smoky explosions and gooey polymers are possible results. Rocketry Workshop presented by Action Science It’s Rocket science for kids in our hands-on exploratory workshop for sky-climbing enthusiasts. We’ll explore Newton’s Laws of Physics and how they apply to rocketry and have a blast learning the science behind blasting off! Each participant will build a real model rocket to take home and we’ll go outside and launch several types of Action Science rockets. The Safety Code of Model Rocketry will also be taught.
