Robin Reynolds-Bender, owner of On the Roxx Bar in Portage, has become a well-known figure in the Northwest Indiana (NWI) community, but Reynolds-Bender’s journey into the bar industry wasn’t typical. It was a mix of passion, curiosity, and a commitment to her community that led her to open her own bar.
Reynolds-Bender’s career began behind the bar. Though she chooses not to drink any alcohol, she was drawn to the energy and vibrancy of bartending. The social aspect of the work quickly captivated her, and with over 10 years of bartending in NWI, she’s gained valuable experience in the industry. Her love for live music and karaoke, two staples of the bar scene, also became central to her vision for On the Roxx. When she was approached with the opportunity to purchase the bar (previously known as Boomers), she didn’t hesitate. The large parking lot was a key factor in her decision.
After purchasing the bar, Reynolds-Bender immediately began making improvements, investing her own money into advertising and revamping the space to match her vision. Today, On the Roxx spans 10,000 square feet and blends the best of sports and music. The venue boasts four professional horseshoe pits, cornhole setups, an outdoor bar, 10 dartboards, and a variety of bar food.
What sets On the Roxx apart is its sense of community. Reynolds-Bender has cultivated a laid-back environment where people of all ages feel welcome. Whether it’s karaoke, live music, or a game of pool, the bar has something for everyone in NWI.
One of Reynolds-Bender’s achievements is Roxx Fest, a two-day event that will hold the title of one of the top music concerts in NWI. The festival, held every summer in June, draws major names in rock music. The 2025 edition will take place from June 20-21.
Outside of On the Roxx, Reynolds-Bender is a proud mother of two grown daughters, both of whom live in NWI. One is an accountant, and the other is a registered nurse. Reynolds-Bender is deeply proud of both of them and enjoys watching them succeed in their respective careers. In addition to On the Roxx, Reynolds-Bender also owns JRM Furniture Resale, a used furniture store located on Central Avenue. While she focuses on On the Roxx, her mother helps run the furniture store, keeping everything in motion. Reynolds-Bender considers herself a workaholic but says she’s never worked a day in her life because she loves what she does.
“As long as you love what you do, you don’t ever have to work a day in your life,” Reynolds-Bender said.
Reynolds-Bender’s story is a testament to the power of passion and hard work. From her early days in Crown Point to her current success, her vision for On the Roxx has helped shape the NWI bar and music scene. Her dedication to the community has made the bar a welcoming space for everyone, whether for live music, karaoke, or simply a night out with friends.
Thanks to Reynolds-Bender’s love for her work, On the Roxx continues to be a cornerstone of the NWI community.
