Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is continuing to move forward in its electric generation transition work. In an effort to both diversify and plan for the future, NIPSCO recently announced the completion of the Cavalry Solar project.
"Cavalry Solar is a critical step forward in our mission to deliver sustainable and cost-effective energy to our customers," said Vince Parisi, NIPSCO president and chief operating officer.
Calvary Solar brings additional megawatts of power to Northern Indiana through both solar and battery storage.
"The integration of battery storage showcases our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for a seamless energy transition," said Parisi.
In fact, Calvary Solara is a 200-megawatt (MW) solar facility in White County that boasts an additional 45 MW of battery storage capability.
To complete this project, NIPSCO partnered with NextEra Energy Resources.
"We're thrilled to collaborate with NIPSCO on this project," said Anthony Pedroni, vice president of renewables and storage development at NextEra Energy Resources. "We look forward to continuing our partnership to bring more renewable energy solutions to Indiana."
NextEra Energy Resources is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and the sun and a world leader in battery energy storage.
The goal of the Calvary Solar project is to generate clean energy sufficient to power roughly 60,000 homes and contribute an estimated $25 million in additional tax revenue to White County.
Calvary Solar is just one of many electric generation projects that NIPSCO has undertaken in recent years.
The Indiana Crossroads Solar and Dunns Bridge I Solar projects are also part of NIPSCO’s renewable energy portfolio alongside its wind farms.
Additional electric generation projects are also in the works for the near future.
The Dunns Bridge Solar II project is currently under construction. Positioned in Jasper and Starke Counties, this project will boast 435 MW of solar power and 56.25 MW of battery storage.
To further expand into clean energy, NIPSCO has pledged to be coal-free by 2028. Eliminating coal alone will result in a significant reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
Additional projects are slated to take place across Indiana and Kentucky shortly.
NIPSCO’s electric generation transition work is a key part of NIPSCO's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP)–a comprehensive strategy for a balanced and reliable future energy mix. The IRP is reviewed every three years, with the next plan scheduled for release in November 2024.
