Portage Area Experiencing Gas Leak

This is Portage Mayor Austin Bonta. We are currently experiencing a major gas leak, north of I 94 in the Ameriplex. I 94 is closing in both directions  from Portage to Burns Harbor. There is a gas smell south of this area and  NIPSCO will be checking the area south of I 94, North of US 20 for gas readings. Please stay away from the area for your safety. If you feel you  are experiencing symptoms related to this, please call 911. Thank you. 

UPDATE

NIPSCO crews have responded to a damaged gas line at 6750 Daniel Burnham Dr. in Portage, Indiana.  While the area is safe, NIPSCO supervisors and crews remain onsite to ensure the area's safety and are making the necessary repairs. Presently, a portion of I-80/94 is shut down in both directions.  We ask that you avoid the area to allow the crews to perform the necessary repairs. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience. Additional updates will be provided if the situation changes.

UPDATE 2

Earlier this afternoon, NIPSCO crews responded to a third-party damage to our gas line at 6750 Daniel Burnham Dr. in Portage, Indiana. Gas flow to the damaged section of pipe has now been terminated successfully, and traffic is moving once again. Our crews have begun making repairs to the damaged section of pipe. We’d like to thank the community for their patience during this incident.
