Portage Fire Department is Accepting Applications for Firefighters

The City of Portage would like to announce that they will be seeking applicants for the positions of Firefighters. Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 35, and an Indiana certified EMT at the date of hire. New employees are required to enroll in and complete Paramedic training as a condition of employement. Portage Fire Department will cover the expense of the Paramedic class enrollment and will offer scheduling benefits while enrolled in the program. Application forms are available at the Human resources Office at City Hall, 6070 Central Avenue, Portage In 46368. Applications will be available starting April 15th until May 15th and must be turned in no later than 4:30 pm. Upon completion of the application phase, which includes a written and swim test, an ability test and an interview; the applicants will be placed on a hiring list that will be in effect from February 1st 2011 until January 31st 2012.

Portage Fire Department protects the City of Portage which covers 27 square miles and 35,000 citizens. We answer 5100 calls for service each year. Portage Fire Department staffs 2 advance life support engines, 1 advanced life support ladder and 2 advanced life support rescues out of 3 stations. There are 61 Firefighters and 2 Clerks.

Salaries;

  • For Probationary Firefighter / EMT; $32,500.00 first year.
    • After 1 year as Firefighter / EMT; $41,492.39 annually.
  • For Probationary Firefighter / Paramedic; $34,253.18 first year.
    • After first year as firefighter / Paramedic; $47,439.08 annually.
