With the 2018 season winding down, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball team is still searching for their first win. The searching will have to continue. Saint Xavier University is on another search of their own. The Cougars came into the game looking to even up their conference record and move into a playoff spot, and they did just that. SXU swept the Wave 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 22-25) during a match that lasted just 59 minutes at the Rittenmeyer Center on Tuesday night.
RESULTS
SXU 3 (25, 25, 25), CCSJ 0 (14, 13, 22)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two sets were carbon copies of each other, seeing SXU (7-8, 5-5 CCAC) build up big leads on the road to easy victories. In the first set, the Cougars used extended rallies to gain a ten-point lead at 18-8 before taking the last seven of ten points for the 25-14 victory. The story was the same in the second, as CCSJ (0-15, 0-10 CCAC) hit -.350, and quickly faced a 20-7 deficit. While the Wave won seven quick points towards the tail end of the frame, the result was still a 25-13 loss. Set three was a whole different story. The Crimson and Gray hit .156 and committed only four errors in what looked to be their first victory of the evening. Calumet led 22-19 late in the set, but the Cougars would go on to earn the next six points to steal the victory, and lock up the match, 25-22.
STATS OF THE GAME
The Wave hit only -.014 for the game, while the Cougars committed 13 service errors in their three set victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Jose Gonzalez (SR/Calumet City, Ill.) was the only Wave player who hit in the black, attacking at a .125 clip. He also figured in two blocks, as well as tallying six kills and six digs in the match.
