Exercise Fit for Cold Days and Nights

Fitness Center expert offers tips for staying active during winter

February-1st-Franciscan---Article-1-PictureLeah Okner, wellness manager at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers in Schererville, says there are numerous ways to overcome the urge to become a couch potato.

“Staying active when it is too cold to be outdoors can be a challenge,” Okner said. “Work with what you have, you don’t need equipment to stay fit.”

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO KEEP YOU MOVING

• If you have stairs in your home, climb them for cardio • If you watch TV, march in place during commercial breaks • Make a circuit with body weight exercises • Find a friend. Working out with someone increases motivation and makes the time go by faster • Do each of the following exercises. Repeat 3-6 times, depending on time available: push-ups, planks, squats, lunges, marching in place with knees high

Experts in the fitness industry also agree that engaging in group exercise classes on a regular basis brings a higher sense of accountability, more motivation and a desire to stick with workout programs for longer periods of time.

Omni offers group exercise classes taught by certified instructors, who motivate clients and teach numerous workout techniques that will boost metabolism, strengthen muscles, increase endurance, and make participants more excited about coming to the gym.

Omni offers more than 140 classes (land and water) per week for beginning, intermediate and advanced clients.
