A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Sanja Kirova

Sanja-KirovaThe Portage Boys & Girls Club chose to select Sanja Kirova as their Youth of the Year, and Sanja had the incredible honor of being named the Porter County Youth of the Year on Tuesday evening!

A native of Macedonia, Sanja's story is not only unique, but truly inspiring. After moving to the United States in elementary school, Sanja faced a massive language barrier and cultural transition. Once she started going to her Boys and Girls Club, though, she knew all would work out for the better. She discovered her deep passion for art and digital media and has earned not one, but two national awards from Boys & Girls Clubs of America in game design and stop motion animation. She also enjoys reading, drawing, playing volleyball, writing, and is enrolled in all pre-AP classes. Talk about a girl who does it all!

Kirova spoke warmly of her years spent at the Boys & Girls Club. "In a short period of time, the Boys & Girls Club became my safe haven where I could be carefree, respected, and supported in all I do. Now the club is like my second home where I advance daily and secure a brighter future." Kirova also loves being able to meet and work with new club members, since the club was able to do so much for her. She enjoys watching them try new activities, mature into responsible and successful citizens, and transform into well-rounded youth.

Kirova is also a strong advocate for embracing the diversity among students.

"I'm an opportunity taker, and I encourage my peers to do the same and seize the moments life offers," Kirova said. "In my experience as a leader, I've always supported the idea of independent functioning programs where individuality is key."

Kirova recognizes the importance of mutual respect, perseverance, dedication, discipline, and overall hard work. After all the good the Boys & Girls Club has done in Kirova's life, she can't imagine not staying involved as she grows older. Between volunteering, sponsoring, donating, tutoring, mentoring, fundraising, working as an employee, or just by being an advocate of the organization, Kirova knows that there is never a shortage of opportunity in staying active with the club.

Beyond staying active in the club, Kirova also recognizes the major importance of staying active within our community as a whole.

"Community involvement is not only important for the people who receive help. It allows youth to explore, develop, and express their abilities, stay informed in their community, and gain experience that will eventually serve as life skills," said Kirova. "Learning the noble skills of compassion, respect, and responsibility at an early age contributes to a better future for the entire community, and the Boys & Girls Club teaches this on a daily basis."

Going forward, Kirova encourages fellow members and members yet to come to continue working hard toward their dreams, just as she has. She stresses the importance of continued community involvement and collaboration and says to "persevere, learn, listen, create, inspire, and carry on."

Congratulations on your truly outstanding accomplishments, Sanja! Our community is proud and fortunate to have you represent us as the Porter County Youth of the Year!
